After OcEAnic //
Leadership

After Oceanic is led by Hawai‘i-born and Hawai‘i-based artist and spatial practitioner Sean Connelly, who founded the practice in Honolulu in 2010.

Sean’s work bridges contemporary art, architectural thinking, cartography, and civic engagement—treating built environments as cultural records shaped by power, memory, and responsibility—while remaining intentionally nimble, convening the right relationships and expertise with each place and partner as the work demands.

Sean holds advanced training in architecture and design (Harvard University Graduate School of Design; University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa School of Architecture), has held academic appointments including at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Architecture, and serves as a Commissioner At-Large with the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

Sean’s practice has been supported by fellowships and grants including the Graham Foundation and the Sundance Institute, and Connelly’s research and writing includes peer-reviewed publication in the Hawai‘i Journal of History.

Public Message of Gratitude

This work exists because of relationships carried by many hands. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has shared land, knowledge, critique, patience, and imagination—holding responsibilities to remember the past while making futures together.

Deep gratitude is extended to the cultural practitioners, ʻāina stewards, community partners, scholars, students, institutions, funders, and supporters whose trust, critique, and care have sustained and advanced this important mission-oriented work over time.

O ke kahua mamua, mahope ke kūkulu.

Site first, then the building.
Learn all you can, then practice.
